This year my family went camping in Coloma, a tiny town in which the discovery of gold was made in California at Sutter's Mill along the American River. My family camped in this same area when I was about twelve with my cousins, and we had such good memories we decided to come back. It is located near Placerville about forty-five minutes from Sacramento. The location was nice being that it was almost half-way between Orange County and Portland where my brother Randy and his family reside.
We were able to rent trailers at the campground. I got the girl trailer with Erin and Jubi who were great roommates, and Mike the boy trailer with Jed and his friend, Chris who were typical teenage boy roommates.
We spent most days sitting by the riverside just below our sites. Mike and Erin did most of the work creating a rock wall so the little girls, Jubi and Violet, would have a safe place to swim. We all took turns in the inner tubes and raft floating down the river just below rapids called Troublemaker at the top of our campground to just after the bridge with a short walk back. One day we went on a level three-four white water rafting trip, and that was a blast! At first I was nervous, especially after the lecture about what to do if the boat flips and you end up underneath, but when it was over, we all wanted more rapids! Bring on level five!
